Cropping is free, resizing is not

A crop throws away pixels outside the rectangle and keeps everything inside it exactly as it was. There is no resampling and no quality loss in the geometric sense, which makes cropping the cheapest edit available. If you need a particular aspect ratio, always prefer cropping to it over stretching, because a stretched face is obvious and a cropped one is not.

The one cost is resolution. Crop to a quarter of the frame and you have a quarter of the pixels, so check the numbers before you commit if the result has to be printed or has a minimum size requirement.

Keyboard and touch

Drag with a mouse or a finger. The selection is drawn from wherever you press down. If a ratio is chosen, the height follows the width automatically. The four number fields accept typed values in original-image pixels, not screen pixels, so a crop is repeatable across images of the same size.

Common questions

Does cropping reduce quality?

The pixels that survive are untouched, so no. If you save a JPEG the re-encode costs a little, which is why saving as PNG is offered. What you do lose is total resolution, in direct proportion to the area you cut away.

How do I crop to an exact size in pixels?

Type the width and height into the number fields and use X and Y to position the rectangle. The values are in the coordinates of the original file, so they hold true no matter how the preview is scaled to fit your screen.

Can I crop a PDF page this way?

Not here, but there is a PDF crop tool that trims margins without rasterising the page.
