Add page numbers to a PDF
Useful when a merged document needs to be paginated, or when a court, a journal or a tender submission requires numbered pages and your source did not have any.

Numbering when the cover should not count
Two separate ideas get muddled here. Skipping a page means it gets no number printed on it. Starting at a different value means the numbering sequence itself is offset. A report with a title page usually wants both: skip page one, and start the printed numbers at one on the second sheet. Set start to zero and skip page one to get that.
The number is drawn in Helvetica, which is one of the fourteen fonts every PDF reader is required to have, so nothing needs to be embedded and the file barely grows. Existing page content is untouched underneath.
Common questions
Will the number sit on top of my content?
It is placed in the margin, about 14 points in from the edge. If your document already prints into the margin, choose a different corner.
Can I use Roman numerals?
Not currently. The four formats offered cover the common cases; for front matter in Roman numerals, number the sections as separate documents and merge them.
Does it work on a rotated page?
Yes, though on a page rotated 90 degrees the number follows the underlying page coordinates, so it may appear along the side. Rotate the document first with rotate PDF, then number it.
